Curriculum: What's Covered?

Each day, campers attend classes in each of six musical areas in a rotating schedule. When possible, repertoire in each area is correlated with the session's theme, but time-honored classics and iworld music are also stressed. Areas of instruction include:

Singing (practice with traditional choral singing as well as "show choir" styles; emphasis on healthy vocal techniques, breathing, head voice vs. chest voice, and variety of literature, with solo opportunities for interested campers);

String Instruments (instruction in violin, viola, cello, and string bass when available, depending on age and experience); solo spots available for guitarists;

Percussion (group jam pieces; use of small orchestral percussion such as triangle, temple blocks, claves, and cymbals; techniques for mallet percussion (i.e. xylophone, metallophone, glockenspiel); World Music Drumming; ensemble playing; creative composition;

Keyboard (individualized and group instruction based on student experience; one keyboard per 2 students; students taking lessons may bring their own books);

Recorder and Woodwind Instruments (the Recorder Belt Program is modeled after the Martial Arts- students earn a colored belt for each song they play correctly. Each successive level builds playing ability and musical knowledge. Belts are tied onto the recorder. As students progress in skill, their recorder shows their achievements. Students who play a woodwind band instrument may bring it if they wish to be placed in a small ensemble- only for the brave of heart as small ensembles are challenging);

Movement and Musical Games (International folk dances and multicultural music from around the world; games and activities which stimulate coordination, thinking skills, and knowledge about music and music reading; basic and advanced levels of music theory; some basic conducting).

Each day we also make time for...

      Morning snack and free time

        Lunch

"Tutti Time" (All campers meet together for the last hour of the day for various fun activities, such as arts and crafts, games, choreography with Miss Nicole, or "surprise" fun events. In Italian, "tutti" means "all". See also: "Tutti Time Schedule".)

Each session is 30-40 minutes long. For a sample daily schedule, see Sample Schedule.
