Hello! GREAT NEWS- It’s Recorder Time!!! This year, your child will be learning to play the recorder during music class. This flute-like instrument has existed since Renaissance times, & playing it is a great way to learn the basics of music. We will learn recorder during our regular music classes, but practicing at home will really speed up your child’s progress. Try to go over a song for 5-10 minutes each day (that’s during commercials for one TV show). Here are a few tips for success:

ü Every student in grades 3-5 needs a recorder for every music class starting immediately.

ü Check with your child’s classroom teacher to learn which days your child has music. Or, keep the recorder in your child’s backpack except during use. This really helps with forgetfulness!

ü Students are required to EITHER purchase their own recorder OR borrow one from school. For hygienic reasons, sibling sharing is strongly discouraged. Study books are also available through the school. To purchase or borrow, please complete ONE of the forms below and return it to your child’s classroom teacher ASAP. DO NOT COMPLETE BOTH FORMS.

ü If you already have a recorder, GREAT! You don’t need to buy another one, and there is no need to return either form below. If you would rather not order from school, feel free to pick up a recorder at a local music store.

¯ Blow softly and make sure you cover the holes completely. Otherwise, the recorder will squeak. SOFT IS THE SECRET to good recorder tone! Separate notes with your tongue, not your breath.

¯ Practice one or two measures at a time. Once you have mastered one measure of a song, go on to the next, then put the two together. Next, work on the third measure, and add it to the first two, and so on.

¯ Avoid practicing in the same room with your dog, as he may try to sing with you as you play. This is not a joke!

¯ Stay well! Clean the recorder at least once a week in hot soapy water or the dishwasher & let it dry completely. Put lubricant on before reassembling the recorder.
