Plantation Park Elementary School General Music Program

“Tongue Drum” aka “Slit Log Drum/Guiro” by Sam Greggs, Grade 3- winning Music In Our Schools Month Make Your Own Instrument Contest, March 2018

WHO and WHERE is PPE?

Plantation Park Elementary School is a small, warm-hearted public school located at 875 SW 54th Avenue in Plantation, FL.

WHAT DO WE DO IN MUSIC AT PPE?

Music Room Activities: All students in grades preK-5 receive music instruction for 30 minutes every three to four schools days. Children in primary grades learn to sing on pitch, keep a steady beat, move expressively, and play rhythmic patterns on unpitched and pitched percussion instruments. In intermediate grades, children learn to play recorder, perform more advanced percussion ensembles and singing pieces, and participate in composition and small ensemble performance opportunities. All grades participate in holiday music Sing-Alongs each December. Each March, we celebrate Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) with a Classroom Concert Series, in which all PPE students perform a 30-minute concert in the Music Room during their general music lesson, as well as an annual “Make Your Own Instrument Contest!” The annual instrument deadline is the March early release day. All grades compete in the PPE End-of-Course “Music Bee” exams each May.

“Solfege Major Scale Shakers”- winning Make Your Own Instrument Contest Project by Sydney Thomas- grade 2, March 2018. Each egg is filled with different materials in order to create a Major scale when eggs are shaken in order.

Students who miss class can access music lesson materials via their Canvas music course. Sign onto www.sso.browardschools.com using your 06 number and password. Then, click on the orange circle Canvas logo. Next, click on your child’s music course link. Once in that course, check out Announcements and Modules to see what your child has missed.

Integrated Classroom/ Musical Opportunities: Programs are presented by children in all grades throughout the school year. Kindergarten presents a Thanksgiving program and a Mother’s/Father’s Day program (run by Kindergarten teachers); grade 1 presents a fall program each November; all grades participate in patriotic music presentations annually for PPE’s unique Hearts for Heroes/Kids Do Care for Soldiers program, and all grades celebrate Music In Our Schools Month as described above.
